Prenatal
Yoga is one of the most popular ways for pregnant women to bring their body,
mind, and spirit together as they prepare to introduce a new life into this
world.
Prenatal
Yoga gently takes a pregnant woman through preparation for childbirth with the
assumption that labor is the most important marathon she will ever participate
in. We work on breathing for optimal relaxation and awareness, strengthening the
abdomen and legs in preparation for labor, strengthening the arms and upper body
in preparation for post-natal period -- supporting the baby during nursing as
well as carrying the baby around. Finally, we work on flexibility and vitality
in the pelvic floor to ease the birthing process. |
|
Yoga
encourages people to experience each moment as it happens, as it is right in
front of them. So, not only do our Yoginis experience fully the feelings
associated with labor, they are also fully present for the moment when they see
their new baby for the first time, hear the baby’s first cry, or feel the baby’s
first kiss. |

Three Questions to Ask If Considering Prenatal Yoga?
|
1.
Am I in my second or third trimester?
We recommend
that women take it easy during their first trimester as they begin the
process of adjusting to their changing bodies. If this is not your first
pregnancy and your previous pregnancies were problem-free you may join
the Prenatal Yoga Workshops in your first trimester.
2.
Do I have my doctor’s blessing to start a prenatal yoga class?
This is a pre-requisite in our studio. It’s
always important to check with your doctor before you begin a new
exercise program. Nine times out of ten, they’ll encourage you.
3. Is the
instructor teaching the course specifically
trained to teach Prenatal Yoga?
This is
especially important, as the pregnant woman’s needs are quite different
from most other people frequenting yoga studios. Do your homework. There
is a difference between having an instructor who ‘sort of’ knows what
you can do with a pregnant woman and one who is 100 percent sure. |

A
lot of the women notice that it is difficult to regain their
pre-pregnancy shape. This is partly due to the fact that a lot of women
gain more than the recommended 20-30 pounds during their pregnancies.
Regular Yoga practice, along with proper nutrition, can help keep the
pregnancy weight gain within the recommended range.
Prenatal
Yoga also addresses the common issues affecting women’s bodies during
pregnancy: low back pain, sciatica, shortness of breath, leg swelling,
and anxiety. |
|
Our
pregnant Yoginis perform exercises that stretch and strengthen their
musculature, promote circulation and improve breathing. They share in
the experience of the other mothers-to-be. By breathing properly,
strengthening their back muscles and by understanding their bodies
better, these strong women are more effectively able to push during the
delivery or to recover after a caesarian section. Their improved
body-awareness serves them well in the postnatal period as their bodies
begin to change once again. |

Three Reasons Why Prenatal Yoga Is
A Great Option For You And Your Baby
|
1. Body Knowledge
Yoga is a wonderful technique
for becoming better acquainted with your body. A regular practice also trains
you to focus on different areas of your body, which is particularly helpful
during childbirth. |
|
2. Mood
Moderation
Yoga’s emphasis on breathing
and moving simultaneously helps you breathe more deeply. For most women, this
triggers the feeling of deep relaxation and well-being. A calmer and more
relaxed you, creates a calmer and more relaxed environment for your baby... and
your husband! |
 |
|
 |
3.
Moral Support
Joining other
women in a pre- or postnatal yoga class is a great way to make new
friends, all of whom are facing the same changes you are. Even if you
prefer to practice at home, an occasional class at the studio lets you
tap into this support network. |
