Dear Client,
As we head
into the Spring Season our minds and our bodies feel like they are starting to
awaken from deep slumber. Winter with it's cold weather, gray skies
and chilly wind makes for an inhospitable outside environment. Many
physical activities seem like much more of a chore in the wintertime
for some reason. It's like our bodies are trying to hibernate, when
the pace of our lives does not allow them to. Often, winter is the
time of more joint aches and muscle stiffness, something the Chinese
doctors noticed two thousand years ago.
Spring, on the
other hand, is the universal season of rebirth. The snow melts, the
sun reappears on a more regular basis and the spring air warms all
around us. The mood lifts and the spirit begins to rejoice.
We devote this issue to making you
feel good this spring, and to reaching emotional and physical
wellbeing. I hope you find this newsletter helpful and pass it along to those people in your life who
might also enjoy it.

BUDOKON
BOOTCAMP:
Come ready
for a serious workout!
On Saturday March 25th our studio held it's first Budokon
Workshop with Oksana Fitzmaurice, the only certified Budokon instructor in New
Jersey. I took the class along with many of our instructors and clients. The
interest in this class was so strong after the last newsletter that we had to
hold two workshops on that day instead of the one we had planned initially.
For those who missed out last month's newsletter, the literal translation of
Budokon is "the way of the spiritual warrior." Budokon is a fusion of Power
Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation in one complete system. This system develops
strength of the body, sharpness of the mind, and serenity of the spirit.
The class was
spectacular. Even the instructors, who work out daily and are limber from the
Yoga and Pilates felt that the workout was
terrific
and engaged the muscles of their bodies that they don't routinely use.
The class started off with yoga postures geared towards
warming you up and awakening the muscles. As the body limbered up the pace sped
up and the postures began flowing from one into the next in a dance-like
progression. Oksana was great with demonstrating, as well as with verbal cuing,
making the class move along smoothly and comfortably.
Next thing I knew I was practicing punches, kicks and learning how to protect
myself, and take out somebody's knee caps (something I feel we should all know
:). This part of the class was especially empowering and emotionally releasing.
As the class began to wind down, Oksana brought us all back
for some personal guided meditation that I thought was crucial for helping me
center, connect to the group, and feel really relaxed. .
When I walked out of that class I felt strong, powerful,
worked and ready for absolutely anything!
If you would like to experience
Budokon but Saturday morning does not work well with your schedule, please email
us your availability, as we might be starting a second Budokon Bootcamp class
shortly. |

CHANGING SEASON'S
IMPACT ON HEALTH:
Two Perspectives
- Western and Eastern
|
Spring is beautiful and I love it. I find all aspects of the season wonderful
and refreshing. I cherish the fact that I can spend more time outdoors and enjoy
the nature's season of awakening.
Whereas many people feel the same way about the season, spring brings them
special challenges. These can come in the form of increased upper respiratory
infections, more frequent bouts of bronchitis or sinusitis, and the return off
seasonal allergies.
A western physician would
recommend that you avoid the triggers of these infections and allergens, wash
your hands frequently and come and see the doctor if these measures fail. A
non-sedating antihistamine may even be recommended at the first sign of itchy
eyes and nose.
A physician trained in
Eastern medicine's approach to health and well-being would say that is not
enough. A seasonal change is seen as a moment of flux in the universe. Such a
flux is seen to happen on all levels of nature. In this system of thought man is
considered to be a microcosmic reflection of the universe, and thus susceptible
to the same changes in the body. Thus the
change
of seasons can be especially difficult on people whose organisms cope poorly
with change, people whose composition predisposes them to catch illness rapidly.
Even healthy organisms under the pressure of chronic stress will tend to break
down around this time of year. |
Eastern physicians place a great
deal of importance of strengthening the body in anticipation of the changes in
nature. Healthier diet, regular exercise and even a better state of emotions
would all be seen as crucial for making it though a seasonal change without an
illness. Special herbal and acupuncture
treatments are available to shore up the body's energetic makeup and the immune
system.
In early May, we will
add medical acupuncture as one more option for you at the studio. We hope you
take advantage of this 3000-year old healing tradition and see what it can do
for you. In the meanwhile, eat well, drink plenty of water, sleep well and let
your body rest and recharge as much as possible! Let the spring's natural
beauty soothe your soul and calm your Shen, spirit.
David Boguslavsky, MD is a Family Doctor
out of
Somerset Medical Center. Soon he will be opening an exclusive boutique medical practice
that will blend Western medicine
with Eastern healing techniques. |

CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY:
Do good, feel good!
|
Whether it is helping with the activities of the
synagogue or participating in a
church charity event there are few things that bring as much joy to the heart as
contributing to the well-being of the community. Every culture seeks to
raise the spirit of community awareness and places a high emphasis on
cooperation among the different groups to achieve the same goals. Over the
course of the past year we have been approached numerous times to contribute to
a local events. We've always responded positively and looked at this as
not only helping our clients but the larger community we are a part of.
It is in that spirit that we'd like to highlight
Elizabeth Bryce, a
young woman from Philadelphia who approached us recently and asked for our help
in spreading the word about her upcoming "Team In Training" Triathlon experience.
She wrote:
"...As the largest endurance training program in the U.S., Team In Training
provides its participants with coaching and training expertise in exchange for
raising money towards finding a cure for leukemia and lymphoma. As part of Team
in Training, I will be competing in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon on April 30th
in St. Petersburg, Florida. The race consists of swimming 1 mile in the Tampa
Bay, bicycling 27 miles, and finally finishing with a 6.2 mile run.
  |
While this race will be a major physical test for me, I am positive that I
will finish will a huge smile on my face. Furthermore, after learning about my
“patient hero,” Adam Spector, I have all the additional motivation I need. Adam
is 24 years old and has been diagnosed with a rare form of primary refractory
Hodgkin’s disease. Though his prior treatments have been unsuccessful, he has
begun experimental treatment this year at the National Cancer Institute in
Bethesda, MD and remains hopeful.
As I alluded to earlier, each Team In Training participant agrees to raise money
to benefit research and patient services for those affected by leukemia,
non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Please make a
donation to help me reach my fund-raising goal of $4400 by April 14th.
You can donate online by visiting my website at
www.active.com/donate/tntepa/LizBryce. Remember, all donations
to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are 100% tax deductible!"
Elizabeth is an
inspiring young woman and I encourage all of you to support her in her quest to
raise awareness and money towards the research that may some day result in
finding the cure for leukemia and lymphoma!
