Yoga aims to make
the human body into a fit and worthy vehicle for
self-realization. It is a very practical means of awakening and
releasing hidden qualities, strengths and understanding in the
practitioner. Countless postural, breathing, and meditative
techniques are utilized to foster strength, flexibility,
awareness, and above all, a state of deep and profound
relaxation. This brings the student to a much greater sense of
who they are and how their body is; weaknesses are first
revealed then strengthened and healed; strengths are developed,
and understanding grows; beginning with the body, the breath,
the self, and then others, the world, and life itself. Fantastic
as these claims may sound, the reason Yoga has been around for
thousands of years is because it really does work!

Though the focus of Hatha is
often on postural work (asanas) it is far more than an exercise
program, it is a way of life that relaxes and liberates mind,
body, breath and spirit. The word Yoga means to join or unite;
the training of the mind, through the perceptive organ of the
skin, leads to the student being fully aware of being focused on
their body, in the position, and in the present moment.
Yoga is a vast subject, containing many aspects to be
savored and enjoyed over a lifetime. Everyone can learn and benefit, whatever their body type, personality, or situation in life. |

Yoga is a science, an art, and a philosophy. Countless
postural, breathing and meditative techniques are used to make
the practitioner strong, healthy and aware, leading gradually
towards self-realization. The Asana is the bodily
position, the form, a visible, external expression, the solid
form. Pranayama is breathing consciously and with awareness in
such a way that prana (life force, vital energy) can flow into
and move around the body. Mudras are symbolic attitudes and
gestures, such as hand movements, or bodily positions, taken up
in order to seal or lock energy (prana). Bandhas are applied
through very subtle psychic muscular contractions in order to
harness prana (energy) and direct it. |

When the gaze is taken to a particular point and
held there, the attention becomes very clear and focused. Hatha
Yoga uses countless postural, breathing and meditation
techniques to create good health and well being, thus preparing
the practitioner for self-realization. The precious gift of
Vinyasa Yoga is that all these subtle, yet powerful
elements are incorporated into one, cohesive whole. The practice
becomes a delicately phrased, tender, moving meditation. This
does not happen overnight - be patient, persevere with your
practice, and these matters will become more clear to you over
time. |
"To be truly great, dwell on
what is real and not what is on the surface. Dwell on the fruit
and not the flower." (Lao Tsu)

Yoga is a way of life, an ancient, well-proven practice, dating
back several thousand years. It's fascinating to realize that
people then, as now, sought to have peace of mind, a healthy,
strong, fit body, and a fulfilled satisfying life. Achieving
these objectives is the aim of Yoga. It is a vast ocean, a great
land, containing riches enough for all needs, approaches, and
wants, to be savored and enjoyed over a lifetime. Many names
are given to Yoga: Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga Vinyasa,
Satyananda, Kripalu, Tantra, Kundalini and so on.

One way of
understanding why there are so many approaches is that Yoga has
been designed so that every individual can learn and benefit,
whatever their body type, personality, or situation in life.
Whatever word prefaces Yoga, the ultimate aim of all forms
remains the same:
"To still the restless mind
(and thus find peace)" (Patanjali yogasutras, book 1, sutra 12)
